Toasted and Thirsty.

I must be mental for choosing to spend this month here in Manila. The heat is unbearable and each day that passes is more like a battle. I'm desperately trying to keep myself from packing my bags and flying off to Korea. I'm sure all Pinoys share the same sentiment about the weather, and all are dying to get whisked away to some frozen nowhere land.

On days when the temperature tips at 35 degrees, I focus my energy on cursing the weather and binging on sour mangoes and bagoong. And because wardrobe choices boil down to only two things: short and shorter - I feel obligated to flex my stubborn, lazy muscles in the gym. It's hard alright, but let me tell you, working out in a sauna-like condition definitely pays off. I've lost some weight and it's something I feel really happy about. I still have a long way to go so you wouldn't see me in a teeny-weeny swimsuit mode anytime soon.

As for my health, I'm still recuperating. It turns out I have something simple but it pretty much binds me to long-term medication. And although it's disheartening as it is, at the crux of it all, I've realized that life is too short to let one's dreams go to waste. I've decided to live that dream, so I'm putting up a small business with the help of some people close to me. I'm still in the planning stage, but hopefully this July or August, we'll be ready to roll.

Amidst all these things that get my thoughts flying in all direction, I'll be lying if I say that I don't miss my Korean life. As a matter of fact, I miss it everyday (especially in this heat!). I'll be coming to Korea after the holy week is over, and I can't wait to hit the beaches there, and bask in the cool spring weather while sipping a sweet bubbly cup of Hoegaarden. In Korea, I just buy it at big supermarkets. Unfortunately, I don't know where to get it here in Manila. I sooo miss drinking this beer with my favorite beer-buddy Chris!

Music for the Shallow.

While waiting for the new season of "Gosspil Girl", I started watching this show called "90210", and yes it's a spin-off from the popular TV series in the 90's. Overall, it's lower than mediocre, but even with all the unimaginative plotlines, sickening melodrama, never-ending relationship issues, and actors who desperately need acting classes, I still find it entertaining (I'm pretty shallow and I'm not that hard to please). And as a bonus, they've got really great music, and that kinda makes me look forward to the next couple of episodes. Well, here are my current favorites.

Somber.

I'm feeling a bit under the weather lately, and it doesn't help that I stupidly lost my wallet yesterday, ID's, and credit card included. We already cancelled the card this morning, and I'm thankful that nobody got to use it. This isn't the first time it happened, and it kills me that I wasn't careful enough and did the same mistake again. I lost my other wallet on a bench at a train station last month, and when I came back to get it, I was told that some guy wearing high school uniform took it. Chris immediately called the bank to cancel the card. The replacement came a week after that.. It sucks that I have to go through the same process all over again. I hate repetitive mistakes. Now, all I wanna do is curl up on the bed and wallow in my stupidity and carelessness. In the midst of wallowing, I'm listening to these songs which I recently found to be surprisingly 'depressed-appropriate'. One Costly Craving.

Today's menu is smoked salmon. A recent trip to VIPS got me in the mood for it. So after deliberately and purportedly kicking enough tantrum as I can manage, Chris ordered it online. I guess you could call me a wimp for doing so, but it's only with this display of temperament that Chris would be willing to oblige. So last night, the salmon arrived and I could barely wait to have it all thawed and sink my teeth on it. It was really good, and I couldn't get enough of it. A portion of it, we ate raw like carpaccio without the sauce. Then I sliced up some, and tossed it in my salad. I marinated the remaining salmon in lemon juice, waiting to be pan-fried later. But the hefty price tag kinda makes me feel guilty... I guess 30,000 won for a bunch of cut-up fish is just not worth it, like Chris redundantly pointed out. The price is something I wasn't aware of, till it was packed and delivered in our doorstep. Who knew salmon could be that expensive? I could have had a big, fat, juicy steak for the same price!

"The Machiavelli Covenant"

Even with all those newly-formed callous on my feet, I somehow managed to go to Kyobo bookstore and check their wide selection of books. I was looking for some good history books like what Chris suggested, but I figured after I'm done with the first 10 pages, there's a very big chance I'm gonna get bored and the next 10 will be hard to endure.. So I opted for a good novel instead. I'm not really a book collector by any chance, I only have a couple sitting by the bookstand. But since I have a lot of free time in my hands, reading can be a good diversion. So I got "The Machiavelli Covenant" cause government conspiracies have always been interesting for me. The synopsis is good, promising I should say.. I just hope it delivers.

Of Salads and Stuff.

I love this Salmon and Shrimp Salad Chris brought home last night. It comes with a pack of yoghurt apple dressing which isn't really appealing to my taste, so I ate the salad without it. I love all kinds of salads and two of my favorites are Ceasar's and Avocado Salad. I used to go to Rack's back home cause they serve the best-tasting Ceasar's Salad in town. My father's Avocado Salad on the other hand, is the best among I've tasted... There isn't anything quite like it. He used to make it on a hot summer day, and nope.. I'm not referring to mashed Avocadoes with milk and sugar, although I'd kill for a cup of that right now! ^^ One of the best things about salad is that you could enjoy it anyway you want to. You could have them as side dish, as an appetizer, as a meal, even as a snack. It's just so uncomplicated, like how I want my food to be. ^^

Best I ever had.

If someone's to ask what's my most unforgettable birthday ever, I'd say my 24th. It was really special to me as I got to celebrate it with Chris for the first time. He picked me up from work that day, carrying a huge bouquet of pink roses which generated quite a number of "ooohs" and "aaahs" from the amused crowd of teachers and Korean students. I recieved flowers from some boys before, but nothing as big and intricate as that, so I held onto it awkwardly cause it felt so huge in my hands. Since it was my birthday, I get to choose the menu and restaurant I wanted. I chose "The Red Crab" in Tomas Morato, simply because I had a pleasant dining experience there, and I couldn't think of any other place that serves better-tasting crab dishes. I ordered the 'Spicy Szechuan-style' while Chris got the conventional 'Steamed' one, and we each had a glass of wine after that.

The next day was our trip to Baguio, our sort of 'extended' celebration. Two of my closest Korean friends from school insisted on coming when they knew about my plans. They tried to bribe me (disguised as birthday gifts) with a handbag, a huge teddy bear, and baseball cap so it was impossible for me to say 'no'. I also brought along a friend who also works at the language school. We didn't have a car so there was no other choice but to take the bus. It was a long and tiring 5 hours... We settled in our ancestral house which required a bit of cleaning as the caretaker wasn't exactly informed that we were coming. It was the same house where my father lived during his grade school days. They renovated it after the devastating earthquake that hit Baguio in 1990. Mostly, they used wood as it could withstand eathquake better than cement.

M and V (the two other Korean guys) tried their hands on cooking but most of their attempts were unsuccessful, so we resorted to simply ordering from Pizza Hut or KFC. During daytime, we'd visit different tourist spots... and at night, we'd all hang-out in Session Road. They love drinking so much that there wasn't a day that they didn't drink while we're there. M and V garnered a lot of attention from the local ladies whenever we went out. A lot of women (not necessarily sober) approached our table and introduced themselves which was quite a shock to me. I know the boys weren't used to that much attention in Manila, so they felt really awkward (but I can guess what it did to their ego).

On our last day, we all went to Burnham Park. It was mildly drizzling that night, and our clothes were stained from the rain. Chris was so impressed with Baguio that he said he wanted to live there in the future with our kids... I was in total shock as it was the first time he mentioned something about marriage and kids. I didn't know he was 'that' serious with our relationship. What he said made me really happy. I couldn't think of a better birthday gift than knowing the person I love, wanted to spend the rest of his life with me...

The Bread.

I'm currently addicted to this bread which I get at the nearby bakeshop. The shop's name is "Fresh Bakery" (a fact I so recently stumbled upon), and I don't know if they have branches or anything. I consider myself their good customer as I regularly pay them a visit, however, I didn't know about the bakery's name, not till I was about to take a picture of the bread to post here. I couldn't really blame myself for the name recall thing, their name afterall is "Fresh Bakery"... How generic can you get? But it's really good so that fact is the farthest thing on my mind. And without batting an eyelash, it's probably the best bread I ever tasted in Korea... they put really good stuff in it like loads of chestnuts, some other nuts, and chocolate morsels. So good! Reminds me of muffins though, outside it's crisp and with a bit of crunch, and inside it's all moist and yummy! It costs 2,000 won. Really cheap considering a piece of that bread is heavy enough to be a full meal! Love it, love it!

Musical tale of 100's.

I acknowledge that I'm a music lover in every sense of the word... I start my day with music, and I also end it with one. I can't imagine a day passing without hearing my favorite songs! When I'm outside, a player is perpetually glued to my ears... and without it, everything feels oddly quiet ^^ I also have a very short attention span and music helps me concentrate, especially when I'm doing something important. So it's kinda helpful in a way. I remember when I was young, I had difficulty memorizing the multiplication table, so my mom bought me a casette tape that plays the multiplication song. In no time, I memorized it. Mom figured, if I can memorize my nursery rhymes, I could also do it with numbers, and she was right! It was then I knew that music can actually help my brain function better...

I appreciate so many kinds of music.. but there are the ones I can't stand like Techno Pop. It's impossible for me to stand listening to one.. The beat and redundant lyrics peeve me so much. I also hate Jazz that uses a lot of trumpet sounds, cause it sounds like an 'impish fart', and unconsciously you find your toe tapping to the beat, your arms swayin a bit, to the sound of 'IMPISH FART' ?! Sorry for my choice of words... Slow Rock songs from the late 80s to early 90's are also unacceptable to my ears. It's pure torture listening to one. If I get to listen to it the whole day, I swear, my ears will definitely bleed! Country music, unfortunately, is also included in my growing stupid list of unacceptable music. I'm not sure why, but I tend to associate country music with horses (I'm a very strange girl and I know that). Then there's this Crunk music, a.k.a. "suffer-me-no-more"... Some of my friends like Crunk, but I always thought it's all noise, like some random guy blabbing non-stop then one day, they decided to call it music! OK, I dread writing this... Death Metal (or any music associated with the word 'METAL' for that matter), we all know the reason why everybody hates this kind of music. I'm struggling to even type it, and I'm sure my voice will edge up a few octave when I say it out aloud. That's how much I hate it! The last one may come as a surprise to many, and I'm not sure exactly what genre this music belongs to, but I call it some Creepy Choir Music . It scares the hell out of me. Like the stuff they play in horror flicks with old churches as their backdrop... or something like that.

Let's go to the good part.. songs which I like.. I have like 500 of them, but since my player could only accomodate a limited number of songs (cause I'm also listening to a couple of audio books and it takes a lot of space too ^^), I skimmed a hundred of my favorites out of the 500. And it proved to be more difficult than I anticipated. Favorites among favorites, weird analogy. The list changes from time to time, like I'd replace a couple of songs with other ones... But mostly, I'd stick to this kind of genre. I usually get my inspiration from OST's, movies or TV shows that played it, and some random music videos that I chanced upon. My sister thinks it's not very original, I just roll my eyes and tell her "So?"... Her chick music preference isn't really appealing to me. I don't hate it but I don't like it either. But sometimes, it gets to my nerves. Like when she put the song "Bleeding Love" in repeat mode, and I got to hear it repeatedly.

Frozen lake.

While strolling in Gwacheon area, I saw this frozen lake. It's beautifully surrounded by purplish pine trees. It was already past sunset when I saw this and I would love to see it in daytime too. I'm sure it's even more beautiful.

The Cake.

I wasn't exactly in the celebratory mood last New Year's Day, and all I wanted was to get some sleep. But Chris didn't want to make it an ordinary day so he asked me out on a date. We went to Bennigan's for my favorite baby-back ribs, and it took nearly an hour before we could get a table. We must have spent 3 hours there before we decided to come back home. I took his New Year's picture before we left.



Chris then asked me to go home first. He said he forgot something. When he came home, he was carrying this..



It came with a greeting card that says "Happy New Year's Day... from Oppa". So the New Year's day wasn't exactly jumpin, but nevertheless, he made my day! ^^

A rundown.

As if my verry long previous post wasn't enough, I'm going to share a run-down with the things I love about sis' wedding.

1. Flowers - her bouquet was more of the conventional side... lot's of pink roses. The other flowers that adorned the venue was rather impeccably unique. It gives a tropic-ish kind of vibe. Mom arranged it for her. At least she didn't need any florist.

2. Gown - she found this couturier at multiply.com. She's just a newcomer, a budding designer who is brimming with new ideas. It wasn't just a typical serpentina bridal gown... the beading and crystals worked for me. Sis really looked beautiful in her figure-flattering ensemble. The parents of both the bride and the groom wore her creation as well as the prinicipal sponsors. Everyone looked 'smashing' with her design. Even the flower girls who wore a ballerina inspired dresses, accesorized by real flowers pinned on their short skirts, looked pretty.

3. Music - the newly weds didn't shell a single cent for the singers and band. They are all good friends with my sis and they were just so happy to be of service at her wedding. They actually belong to the musical ministry of their church. They played from gospel songs, to acoustics, to jazz, to pop... Other songs were conveniently played right out of my sister's laptop, and it helped that they have a very good sound system that night.

5. Photography - their professional services are for free. Having lots of friends is always a good thing! The head photographer is a good friend of the groom, and he brought his crew with him donning in all black ensemble.

6. Hand-made centerpieces, ornaments, and give-aways - most of the things there were all product of 'Labor of love'. The groom's family and their friends went all out on this. The spa essentials was my sister's idea. And the chocolate give aways was a gift from her maid of honor who flew all the way from U.S.

7. Bubble maker - I never appreciated the use of bubble machines for any kind of event. Not till this one. It gave a sort of magical and fairy-tale like feeling of the place. Especially during the bride's march and the first dance.

8. Time - timing was perfect! The wedding was supposed to start at 3. We ran a little late so it started past four. By the time they had the first kiss, their background was a beautiful and breathtaking sunset.

9. Lighting - at night, the lake was lit with thousands of beautiful colorful lights. The Christmas season sure came in handy. Even the lighthouse right infront of the lake was adorned with colorful lights. The lake was lit with numerous floating hand-made lamps too.

10. Cake - I know I complimented her cake of choice long enough. But seeing it in person, rather than in picture provided by the designer, was a rather different story. Too bad not many people gave attention to it... But I in particular, was dazzled by how beautifully coordinated it looked. As I said before it's blue.. an inspiration they took from the beach. Right on top of the cake was a yacht with two comically looking figurines (so~ not the typical wedding figurines). It's really cute! There were cute little flags that represents the people who came to Manila just to witness their wedding. There's the Australian flag, U.S., Japan, Singapore, Canada, and of course, the korean flag was there. They sort of shied away with the gold trimming, a last minute change from my sister, instead, they removed the trimming and replaced it with starfish, seashells, and dolphins. Simple and straightforward but nevertheless, beautiful in it's own unique way.

The most important factor would be their friends. Without them, it wouldn't be as beautiful and unforgettable as it was. They played a very huge part on making the wedding possible. From the singers, to the bands, to the photographers, the officiating pastor, the coordinator, and even the wedding planner all gave their services for free. Everyone shared their thoughts and ideas as to how they can help make it better. It also helped that my mom got a kick out of helping and designing things herself! She's more on the creative side, a talent she failed to impart us, her children. She did the floral baskets, the wrist corsages that reminded me so much about prom, the flower arrangement of the venue, give aways, and the 'message in a bottle' inspired invitations.

Just in time for new year's day.

I just got back from Jeju today. I'm tired, have sore muscles and aches here and there... I'm dying to write stuff about my recent trip to Manila and Jeju, but right now, I badly need to sleep. For the last ten days, I was constantly on the go I barely slept. And due to exhaustion from keeping up with my crazy schedule, I've been floating in and out of consciousness that I can barely keep track of time... I almost forgot that it's Jan 1st today! It's probably late but I would like to wish everyone a happy new year.

7 hours before my flight back to Manila. I'm feeling anxious to finally see my family. It has only been a month since I went away but somehow it feels much longer than that.

I woke up early, did some final shopping for gifts to bring back home. I forgot to prepare gifts earlier so I was sort of cramming. I didn't realize that there are so many people I need to prepare presents for! I'm glad I was able to get what I needed in a short amount of time. Two hours to be exact! I decided to stick to my original plan and give my sister the wine... with permission from Chris of course! I had it wrapped nicely with peach and gold shimmering ribbons. I know she'll like it.

Time to pack things up...

Of Christmas, weddings, and gifts.

It's decided, I'm going to spend Christmas back in Manila! I haven't really claimed it till I got my hands on the ticket today. It wont be long though, I have to get back here on the 27th. Chris and I are flying to Jeju a day after I come back. We'll probably stay there till New Year's day.

On the 26th, my younger sister will get married at a lake resort just outside Manila. I have to attend, although I cringe at the thought of seeing some of my relatives I hated for so long. It's a deep, deep hate but I don't exactly have a choice. Out of sheer diplomacy, my sister invited them... I was groaning inside after she told me the news that they're comin but I'm good enough to hide my disgust. It's her wedding afterall.. I don't wanna ruin it with my childish idiocy. I have two big problems though... First, I don't have a wedding gift for her yet! I know it's stupid not to think about that since they were engaged for a year and a half. It should've been enough to gather my thoughts and get her something special for that special day. But all along, I thought I wouldn't be able to attend her wedding so I let this one slip. Right now, I don't know what I should give her... I haven't been really attending weddings that much and I don't have any idea what kind of gifts do people give. Should I give her a quilt? A comforter perhaps? But those are too big.. I'd look hideous carrying a gift that big! Plates? Cups and Saucers? But being a klutz is second nature to me and I'm not sure whether she'll recieve it in one piece. I've got my eye on a bottle of Blanco Semi Dolce wine sitting by the cupboard for ages. But Chris is saving that special wine for New Years Day. What will he think after he discovered that it's gone? That I took it. I just hope he wouldn't be that disappointed. Second, I don't have anything to wear! This poses a bigger risk of humiliation. Her motif is peach and gold... I remember reasoning to her about this. I always thought peach and gold are just too debutant-like.. She thinks it's sweet, nice, and 'safe', but if it makes her happy, I can live with that. To make her feel better, I complimented her choice for the wedding cake.. It's blue with gold trimmings.. I thought it's young, fun, and 'edgy'. Right now, even if I try my hardest to remember if I have anything peach or gold, stashed somewhere to wear for the wedding, my head goes blank. I know for a fact that peach has never been my 'color', but gold? I'll surely question my sanity if I bought something sparkly and glittery like gold to wear. I'm running out of ideas right now. I'm landing a little past midnight and I'm absolutely sure I can't buy a 'livable' peach colored dress at that time. We're leaving as soon as I arrive home, to go to the resort and do some final preps. Thinking about it makes me frantic, almost hyperventilated. I'm bound to stick like a sore thumb donning too casual clothes or probably a too formal one. My backup plan would be staying out of the spotlight and cameras.. I'll probably survive.

Other stuff are just minor and insubstantial like whether I should wear mascara or not.. Weddings can be a melodramatic event.. Especially in her case.. My Uncle is going to bring her to the altar... And it will surely bring tears to the whole family considering my father died last year. Waterproof mascaras are no good for me when I start to well up.. I think I should stay away from any eye-makeup for that matter...

So much for craving an action packed adventure in my boring life! This is more than what I asked for...

Since I got plenty of time in my hands, I tried making this slideshow video of Robert Pattinson from the movie "Twilight" and I posted it on Youtube.. I got tired watching other people's video so I tried making it myself, hoping I could come up with something even better. But I'm totally a newbie so please bear with me. And I know I'm not supposed to rant about this, but the windows that I use here is in "K-O-R-E-A-N"! I could change it to English but I didn't want Chris to feel uncomfortable cause afterall, it's his computer.

Absurd as it may seem, but I can't shrug Edward's face out of my head. He has affected me tremendously that I bought all four books from the Twilight Saga. I finished the first book "Twilight", 3 days after I got it. I'm looking forward to start with the next book "New Moon" hopefully by tomorrow. I acknowledge my addiction instead of fighting it, he has been my fix, keeping me sane (or insane?) throughout the day. And it aint gonna stop till I set foot in London, and I get to breathe the same british air as he does.



A lousy update:

I started reading the next book "New Moon" last night and I'm done by dinner time today. I wish it could've entertained me longer.
